A 48-year-old man presented to the accident and emergency department following a mechanical fall. He complained of right-sided hip pain, and reported inability to mobilise or weight bear. On physical examination, his right hip was noted to be shortened, abducted and externally rotated; a pelvic X-ray was therefore consulted (figure 1).
