Intravascular ultrasound-virtual histology imaging in acute myocardial infarction

We describe the novel use of intravascular ultrasound-virtual histology (IVUS-VH) imaging in two previously healthy female patients (47 years old and 39 years old, respectively) who presented with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and highlight the usefulness of this new invasive coronary imaging technique. Both patients had thrombotic occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) arteries (figures 1A and 2A). As they were both young females with minimal cardiovascular risk factors, IVUS-VH imaging was performed to gain a better understanding of the pathophysiology of AMI.
